The Truth of Majora's Mask

  1. Termina never existed before Link arrived there. Certainly, Link's adventure in Termina occurred. However, what I'm saying is that Termina, as a place - a country - never existed before Link arrived there. It's a dreamscape - a fantasy - crafted from either Link's or Skull Kid's memories. It's a land with familiar faces because it was crafted from familiar memories. Think Link's Awakening.
  2. Majora's Mask is Hyrulian in originin. We can't confirm this, of course, but we can assume it is so. Skull Kids, as a species, seem to be native to the Lost Woods, which Lie in Hyrule. In addition, Majora's Mask and the Twili's Fused Shadow share similarities. Let's not forget that Majora's Wrath form and Zant share similar fighting styles (break dancing and moon walking).
  3. Link's adventure in Termina is the quest to accept the inevitability of death. Termina sprung forth in turmoil by Majora's designs. The players are introduced to a thriving land on the brink of disaster, all in three repeating days. Everyone Link helps - from the separated loves to the daughter and her cursed father - symbolize growing up. It's the only way Link knows - we're talking about the guy who saved Hyrule, here. Termina sprung out of Link's mind and, for all its beauty and wonder, the message at the center of it all is the impending future of death. Just look at the moon.
  4. Link is screwed. Sorry, but it's the truth. Link isn't a Kokiri, he's Hylian. During his adventures in Ocarina of Time, nothing bad happened to him because he had the protection of a fairy. However, after the game ends, he enters the Lost Woods WITHOUT a fairy. He's doomed to become a stalfos, just as the Potion Shop owner's son did.

"You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"

Termina is a land constructed by Majora and, while in this land, Link embarks on a grand quest to save the world from destruction. I'm not saying this didn't happen. It did. Link's a hero. However, Majora created the land itself out of Link's memories and ideas. At the point in time in which he met Majora, what concerns the young Link is the knowledge that he is lost. He knows the forest's legends. He knows what happens to people who get lost in the woods...

The Hero's Shade in Twilight Princess, the game that follows Majora's Mask by around 100 years, claims he was once a hero. Like Link, he is left handed, he can take a wolf's form, and most of the songs used to call him come from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Oh, and he resembles a Stalfos.

He also shares a quote with the Happy Mask Salesman. "Believe in your strengths."
  5. Fierce Deity Link represents adulthood. Think about it. Link's quest up to that point - collecting all the masks and helping everyone in Termina - is traded for the Fierce Deity's Mask. It's symbolic of growing up. The idea of adulthood is important within the game.
  6. Link accepts his fate. When we start the game, we find Link searching for a dear friend. By the end of the game, Tatl hints that Link got what he was after. He came to accept his fate. He grew in his journey and, in his own way, he became a man - an adult.

Oh, by the way, Tingle is the Terminian version of Link.

  2. Hero's Shade also has items that resemble the gilded sword and mirror shield. Also, twilight princess Link is a rancher, and since all Link's love intrests except one were sages. It means Link had sex with Malon/Romani, and their family passes down genes over generations to twilight princess. Also, the Hero Shade has a quote that says "Go and do not falter, child"
    Grandpa?

  3. Holy crap. it makes sense. All of it.

Also, Termina-- even the name of the country even suggests the destruction of SOMETHING. Terminal, meaning that eventually it will kill you/be destroyed.

Also, does that mean the Skull Kid was helping Link get through this?

ALSO also, I thought that only Kokiri that entered the forest without a fairy became stalfos? No, cause there was that guy with the cuccoo..

  7. Ok, While this does make sense in some respects, I disagree with some.
First, If we follow the zelda timeline, Link goes missing after ocrina of time and then gannon comes back. We can assume link is doing the Majora's Mask quest. I dont think he turns evil, unless the use of the fierce deity mask does this )which would explain the description that says the mask has a more terrible power than major itself.
Also, Link LIVED in the lost woods for years without a fairy, he was protected by the forest, so I doubt he turned into a skull kid.
But the whole theme is intresting, but I doubt link died. How would the future generations have heros then?

  8. Kokiri that get lost in the forest/woods become a Skullkid, maybe Hylians become a Stalfos?

    Everybody, stalfos

  9. To the commenter posting on Feb 09, 2011 - First, about Link living in the Forest without a fairy, keep in mind that the Deku tree was alive then and was presumably protecting Link from the dangers of the forest. Second, about the timeline. After the events of Ocarina of Time, the Zelda timeline is split. There is the timeline where Link is sent back in time, and the timeline that progresses from the future, where Link is now gone. Wind Waker follows the timeline of the future, where Ganon was sealed and eventually breaks free. Majora's Mask (and Twilight Princess) follow the timeline of the past where Link gets turned into a Stalfos in Majora's Mask and Ganon was never sealed nor laid a hand on the Triforce. In BOTH cases, the Link's in the sequels are NOT descendants of the Hero of Time.

To be honest I'd personally prefer the labelling of subsequent titles in the split time line such as wind waker as non-canon. Although they're entertaining and thought provoking in their own sense, the concept of a legendary Hero 'meeting with a horrible fate', while possibly cliche, has greater meaning in a realistic sense. From this perspective, the canonical progression as a melancholic and dark story (the almost ironic outcome of the saviour becoming doomed to Stalfos while trying to liberate the Termina dreamscape from its inevitable destruction) unfortunately has the most relevant application to our own lives. That to me is sad with the most effect.

  11. In fact once it gets to ocarina of time, after the Deku Tree dies link eventually ventures once again into the forest were the Majoras Mask story is set. After that link gets to fight ganon and seal him away, he becomes a castle guard and becomes a stalfos after dying who since no more having the Master Sword appears with the glided sword in Twilight princess. Later on in the timeline there is Twilight Princess followed by Wind waker: stroy in which the twilight princess quest takes is not mentioned here though it should if the games had been created in different orders as the game timeline goes on. Later on comes the Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks on the storyline. While the story from Skyward sword is in fact the very first in the timeline even before the very original adventure.

    1. learn to spell. and Ocarina of Time link and Majoras Mask link are the same person. at the end of OOT Link sets out on a journey with epona to search for Navi in the lost woods. In the beginning of MM Link is with epona, and without a fairy. you need to either read up on this or play the games more.

      Delete
    2. He's saying that this all relates to the split timeline. The link that is in MM is the link that got sent back to the past at the end of OoT, he went to the lost woods without navi and got lost. We all know from OoT fado tells Link that anyone who enters the lost woods without a fairy and isn't a kokiri will become stalfos. Therefore it is plausible to assume that the whole MM game is link transforming into stalfos and accepting his 'death' (grief theory). Supporting this argument is the fact that the Hero's shade in TP resembles a stalfos, he explains himself he got prevented from passing along his skills and was not recognised as a hero and calls the link from that game 'son' as he is the TP link's ancestor. This is clearly the descendent of the other link from the split timeline that continued to live in the future at the end of OoT. There are plenty of references to support this including the happy mask salesman telling link that he 'has met with a terrible fate' assuming that he is become stalfos/dying. Termina being a parallel world that majora has fashioned based on links memories as he meets him in the lost woods before he falls down through the warp thingy. Termina meaning 'the end' in Spanish and each segment representing a stage of grief until finally link ends on the moon in a dream like and happy place with children, he confronts each one of these and then majora become fierce deity link and accepting his fate.

A new Deku Tree was born and raised, so then, would it not make sense that it protected Link as well?

    1. To June 4,
Yes, the Deku sprout was born, but we can assume that due to just sprouting, its powers are not as strong as the Great Deku Tree from the start of the game, and if not, it is possible that the magic is limited by range, hence the mad shrubs that appear in the hall to the Forest Grove.
      Just a thought.

Also, it is possible that the Fierce Deity mask is still being worn by Link in lost woods, explaining the adult like height and sword capabilities that the Shade possessed that OoT Link never did.

      Delete
    2. Also, that was when Link was an adult, meaning that as a child, the Deku Sprout never existed until the Forest Sage is awakened, which won't happen for seven years.

  14. Protect him from what? He already knows Ganon is plotting to take the Triforce he warns Zelda they capture him, now there is no more threat.

The theory holds up in all regards. BUT let us make the tear fest even more disturbing. You know how Link is kinda slumped over Epona in the first part of the game before Skull Kid attacks? it's cause he knows he's slowly dying/transforming and is trying to convince himself if he finds Navi (which he never does) he will be okay. OR you know that little tumble he takes that's a 'portal' to Termina? That's not a Portal boys a girls it's called a fall, you know what happens when you land head first after a drop that bad you think of something pleasant to hopefully distract you from the fact your about to die. That's right, Link perhaps saw a Skullkid and maybe followed him but he followed off to his one ticket way to Stalfo's lane a more quicker approach if you ask me, better than going mad in the forest and slowly decaying then turning into a flesh less warrior from beyond the grave.

  18. Anyone think that nintendo just screwed up but couldn't fix it because the game was out already or it could be that they made majora just for money and it doesn't have to do with the storyline at all like's it's just a adventure not connected to the other things just for fun as a "known-warrior". In which case link got lost and years later learned to control the wolf in him? I don't know about that last one I have only played OOT and hakf of majora. It is posalbe that link "hooked up" with one of the sages in OOT resulting in a another one just named link.

It was supposed to have a 24 hour clock and was supposed to be the best zelda expansion yet. But due to the failure of the 64dd they made a game about Link...and I'm guessing if this theory holds true...his death?

  19. *Ahem* Actually in the ending of OOT Link loses Navi Link searches for Navi in the lost woods. Link eventually gets lost, meets Majora (Skull Kid) the he ends up being cursed and turned into a Deku scrub. He then meets the happy mask man and he tells he has searched for long to find this mask which makes it so he is coincidently there. Link then starts collecting masks all the three main masks are power, wisdom and courage put them all together and then you get the fierce deity Link. Majora did in fact create the world but not for Link the three goddesses banished him to that "world" so he could govern what happens he chooses the fate of the people not the world. The goddesses say that one day the world will be destroyed. But, they left it in Majora's hands. The four giants are what the goddesses left there to save the world. Majora is an immortal so it doesn't matter if everyone dies to him so he trapped the four giants in creatures. Link then frees the giants and fights Majora in the moon (The children are his power source). Link, being blessed by the goddesses has the power to kill Majora. Link was never granted the power the goddesses tricked him. After he kills Majora Link was granted all the power of the goddesses and then Ganondorf was created they locked him up and stole his power and banished him to the twilight realm thus creating Twilight Princess

  22. Well, I too agree with most of this, like that the TP Hero's Shade is MM Link (because of the sheild, sword, etc.) And it's entirely possible that the whole episode exists only as a result of Link falling through the cave at the very beginning, accepting that it exists in Hyrule history. It could be like the cave on Degobah in Empire Strikes Back, where the place exists and stuff happens, but is tailored to the individual.

I personally think Termina as a place exists, however, before and after and independent of Link. The Skull Kid, the fairies Tatl and Tael, and the Happy Mask Salesman all exist and interact with Hyrule outside of Termina. The fact that they, like Link, are present and carry over from Hyrule to Termina along with the Mask itself, leads me to feel that it's an actual place people can travel to. The similarities in characters I attribute to real-world Nintendo realizing they had perfectly good character models they could reuse; plus, there are plenty of newer characters, leading me not to subscribe to the theory that everyone is a figment of Link's memories. The symbolism is still there, surely, but they would exist anyway.

I actually hadn't thought about the Mask being Twili magic, that's pretty interesting. I do point out, however, that Tingle exists in Wind Waker (in the timeline where adult Link dissapeared after sealing Ganondorf away and killing Ganon, and Ganondorf eventually breaks free and the gods flood Hyrule to save it), and WW is not a dream at all. His character is real and independent, without Link influence.

  23. all of you who are overthinking this LOZ storyline thing are completely missing the point that there is no continuation in the games whatsoever. Nintendo themselves have said there is no set timeline and don't even know where one game picks up and one ends or if they even collide. If Nintendo and the creator of LOZ himself doesn't even know how to string it all together then it doesn't really matter because there ARE NO CONNECTIONS period. Link is merely an AVATAR. Meaning he comes in all different forms, lifetimes, locations, and story settings but with the common spirit of the hero and the main character to defeat evil. Plain and simple. There IS NO TIMELINE. Each game is it's own story with Link always being himself and playing the hero. Seriously. :P

  26. This post is a bit of a joke - clearly little research has been done. Its also a bit useless to just state facts, theres little to no evidence or use of examples to back up any of these points.
None of these ideas are new or something which has suddenly been discovered as fact, these ideas are moreso things that have been argued about and discussed with only 'guesses' as to what the truths are - thats the issue I have with this article, everything is posted as some kind of revolutionary new fact we should all know.

First up, although there is some evidence of MM being a dream, theres more evidence against this and its more commonly accepted that the game in fact took place in another dimension (the games booklet even says this directly) As for the messages in the game, ie the whole stages of death idea or the metaphor for growing up - these have also not been confirmed and are moreso open to an individuals own subjective take on the game. Again, none of this is confirmed, but *some* things mentioned here are plausible and have been discussed many times before.

Not sure where you pulled the idea of Tingle being the Termina form of link either, its been a concept some people have discussed in the past, but theres just not enough evidence for the idea to make it plausible. Yet again, its stated as fact in this article, just slapped on the end with no explanation - eugh.

    1. To be fair, I think the Tingle thing was a joke. But yes, he can't be Link's counterpart because they both exist in Wind Waker and while one can argue that it's not the same Link, it would still make little sense.

  27. Important to point out! The song of healing is Saria's Song backwards! This is kind of an assumption on my part, but I always thought the Skull Kid in Majora's Mask is the same one that Link teaches Saria's Song to in the lost woods in OoT. So Link's kind of undoing all the damage that this Skull Kid has done, the same one who knows Saria's Song as a symbol of the connection between the two of them by playing the song backwards.

  30. Excellent theory, but has one majour flaw, how does link have a child, if he died, during Majora's mask? He would've had to die 7 years after Majora's mask, and after he and Malon had reproduced. Thus, resulting in him looking for Navi, once again, except, his fate being sealed getting lost forever in the woods. Finalizing in Link becoming a Stalfos. Then, in continuation, 1 more generation after Link died, the Link from Twilight princess, would've been Link from Majora's mask and Ocarina of Time's grandson, or even great grandson.

In conclusion, in summary, Link survives Majora's Mask, lives on for 7 more years, within that time span starts his and Malon's life, being as parents. Link, again, ventures out to look for Navi, resulting in him getting lost, and eventually dies, resulting in become the Stalfos, Shade in Twilight Princess. His teachings, the happy mask salesman's quote, "Believe in your strengths, believe" show that Shade, aka The Hero of Time, learned much more in Majora's Mask than we, the people, have proven to know. During Twilight Princess, Shade, Link's grandfather, has no regrets after he meet's his grandson, teaching his lessons to him. Resulting in Shade disappearing forever, soon after he teaches him his final lesson, and revealing his identity.

    This finalizes my response/my theory.

    2. The heroes aren't and don't have to be related to each other. Why do people keep acting like they do? And I thought it was a joke at first, but are people really serious about this Malon stuff? Yeah, she's the only female character they show who's Link's age, but there are other girls in the kingdom. Besides, I still haven't disregarded the Link + Zelda thing. It was the original idea as shown in Zelda II, and is REALLY likely to have happened with Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, possibly Spirit Tracks, etc. In this case especially, the Links can't be related or else it would be incest or something. But my point is that Link doesn't have to reproduce at all, especially not with Malon.

Oh, I can't believe I almost forgot. In the Ocarina of Time split, there's a timeline where Link loses and dies, yet there are more heroes after that. If you didn't even think to consider this don't bother posting about reproduction.

  31. Am I the only one to remember the happy mask salesman was in OOT as well as MM? Therefore supporting anf negating the dream world theory as it could be the real happy mask salesman and he knew of the existance of Termina or it is a dream world and it was created by Link to fantasise and get away from the real world of which majora haunted, however his dreams were tampered with as skull kid was collided with just before the dream world was created, therefore making it almost a nightmare realm more than a dream realm, I think it went OOT MM then TP and that the hero of old is OOT link and that the TP link is in fact not the true link as there is no triforce sign on his left hand
It's details like these that can cost someone a huge chunk of thought

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh yeah, to add to my last comment about it, because link defeats skull kid in Termina he regains control of his mind once more and then finds epona next to him and they escape the lost woods before Link became a stalfos, I believe the ghost of old would be there only because he regretted not being able to teach the TP link anything whilst alive

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not to mention,on an additional note -the reason the skull kid was the antagonist that was helping link come to terms with his death in MM is probably due to the part in OOT when you play Saria's song to him in the lost forest and he says "you know Saria's song too? We should be friends" and you then proceed to sell him the skull mask, thus making him the "skull kid." And it is in this same place that you find the Kokiri girl who tells Link about the Stalfos. Not to mention there are countless subtle hints here and there in the game (MM) that hint at Link being dead (graveyard of Ikana being one).

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well regardless of how true this is, I think Nintendo screwed up somewhat. It's implied that Link entered Termina when he fell (because of the clock symbols and the lack of geographical sense), but he met skull kid, who had already been to Termina and back, before he fell. Of course alternatively, it could be that Majora's role as skull kid was to bring Link there.

Also, skull kid's role in the Link's death theory has been something few people have spoken about. We know because of the thing he said in the ending that he's the same skull kid as the one in OOT so what happened is this:

    - Skull kid had wandered into Termina himself. How and why? Unknown.
    - After meeting the two fairies, he took Majora's mask and started going crazy.
    - He came back out of Termina and mugged Link (which means if it was fated for him to bring Link to Termina, he didn't know), before returning.
    - Link then entered behind him, 'falling' into Termina.
    - After completing his quest and bringing Skull kid to his senses, what happen next with the two is unknown.

Skull kid's ability to go in and out of Termina show at the very least that he wasn't under the same circumstances as Link, hence the conclusion that he was only supposed to bring him there. Of course, if Termina existed only in Link's mind then Skull kid would have to be imaginary too, both in Hyrule and Termina. I doubt that's the case though since he takes the skull mask and pays Link in the Lost Woods, so I prefer to believe that Termina (if it IS the afterlife) is a purgatory for people other than just Link himself and isn't imaginary.

Either way, him being a Stalfos in TP is conclusive proof that he got lost in the woods at some point.
